Depression and the other side....

The Guest House -- <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0"><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">Rumi</span></span>
Yesterday I was depressed but I found myself not fighting the feeling but rather being gentle with myself. I took it easy and didn't try to beat myself up. When someone says, "this to shall pass" it is so true. My husband was such a dear by helping to distract me from myself and focus on other things. Today I have emerged on the other side of that depression. A dear friend offered me this poem today after we talked about how I felt yesterday. This really speaks to me today. Embrace it rather than fight it.

The Guest House

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they're a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.
